The 2016 Kooyong Massale is an estate blend of Pinot Noir parcels from our Tuerong and Balnarring vineyards. The parcels in this wine represent 13.5 hectares.
It is fermented, without yeast inoculation, in open vats for 18 to 20 days, with some whole bunches included. The malolactic conversion is also indigenous. The maturation period was 11 months in French oak barriques (12% new) and large format foudre. It was bottled without fining and with minimal filtration.
September 2015 welcomed the beginning of budburst leading to a dry and warm spring. October was 3 degrees above the average temperature and El Niño affected the amount of rain we received. Vine vigour was controlled due to the lack of rainfall with the canopy generous and open. Fruitfulness was up from the previous vintage and flowering and fruit set occurred unhindered. Veraison commenced in early January.
The period between January and mid-March was warmer than historically usual and harvest began at the same time in February as recent vintages. Conditions remained very dry and warm throughout the harvest period, it was a compact vintage finishing in mid-March. The viticultural team worked steadily throughout harvest and delivered healthy and energetic fruit, with ripeness and acidity well balanced.
Opens with vibrant fruit aromas of blueberry and black cherry along with hints of other interesting aromas including a lifted citrus note, brown spices and a suggestion of cured meat. The intense palate is driven by bright red fruit flavours. Savoury tannins complement the deep fruity finish.
Such a lovely wine! Bright raspberry fruit aplenty and so juicy! Lots of lovely fruit in a plush and round form. It’s not super long, but the instant appeal here can’t be overstated. Yes from me.
Blood plum, cinnamon sticks, red cherry, star anise and whole bunch spice, but throughout, has a kind of earthy character that gives it a little bump up in the appeals stakes. Medium bodied, cherry and exotic spices, a sweet orange juiciness, fine dusting of tannin, and a dry spiced finish of good length, cinched with a little bitterness. I like it.
